The Chicago Film Critics Association has compiled a list of the top 100 Scariest Movies of All Time. It looks like the people who compiled the list know their stuff. I was afraid it was going to be all well-known Hollywood movies, but the list is pretty wide-ranging.

Friday the 13th

I went on friday to see it.

I had to give myself some time to think about this and in doing so I defined what I need in a slasher/horror movie, which turns out to be:
interesting story
believable actors
believable scenario
characters I want to see die
shocking and funny deaths
realistic gore not digital effects
high level of suspense with follow through
intimidating killer.

That being said the Friday the 13th movie was a little disappointing. I was really into it for about 45 minutes, then I started shifting in my seat and repositioning my legs, checking the clock, none of which are good signs.

I will start by saying what I liked about the movie, Jason is alive and a scary beast of a man, I enjoy this take on him because with the older movies he isn’t as scary as he is alive as he is when he’s super evil, teleporting, zombie Jason. In this remake, or alternate version really to Friday the 13th 1-3, Jason is fast and lethal which is scary in the beginning. The opening sequence which is pretty much all the first movie is very decent and although very fast it was not rushed because it unfolds into the story we all want faster which is Jason as killer, not mommy. The first few deaths are also very nice, good level of intensity and gory enough to keep me wanting more.

Then I just begin to get annoyed with all the characters, “the cool black guy”, “nerdy virgin Asian” ,“slutty blonde idiot” ,“jock jr. yacht club” “rebel on a motorcycle” etc….. I suppose all my problems with the rest of the movie are just personal preference and there were people in the theatre that loved the movie.

Anyhow.

I felt the rest of the deaths were like a pointless countdown to just make sure everyone ends up dead, and they are the same repetitive style deaths over and over. Then it was time for boobs. The story just totally dies once Jason gets his mask and the way he even gets it is a total cop out. Then all the characters are totally wasted and drunk from drinking all day, more boobs, and in the evening they are all still awake and coherent. Bullshit! Parties in places like those you are an hour in someone is already belligerent and by the time nightfall comes no one can talk, react properly or understand anything. By the time I’m ready for it to be over, I realize there is this whole confrontational scene left to occur but I’m so bored I don’t even care. Then finally it ends already leaving it open for a sequel already, it overdoes it and re ends again.

Though its just a movie and a slasher/horror movie at that, what has to make sense as long as everyone is dead, oh in my perfect world these movies would still be so scary people would be peeing their pants and watching something new and fresh and not an old idea. I’m still glad I saw it, it was nice to see it on Friday the 13th, I give it a 5 out of 10, I won’t be getting the dvd, but I may netflix it once.

So this film is about a scientist who gets trapped in this groovy house ran by a central AI computer console... he is locked in by the cpu, who refuses to let him out... so he and another "girlfriend" colleague have to outsmart it so he can get out.

any recollection what this was called?

oh god its killing me.

Need an asian/eurasian actressl for xtreme cult film! Hiring now, movie currently in production. 125 a day plus %

We've just jump started our B-movie production and need to cast our lead actress ASAP! We're specifically looking for someone who's part white and part asian in their mid 20's but we're willing to tweak the character slightly for the right candidate.

Please contact aberrantbehaviormovie@gmail.com if interested

The movie's called Aberrant Behavior, a term the Motion Picture Association of America uses to describe any content in a film that isn't classifiable as violence or sexuality but is bizarre enough to warrant a severe rating and this one has tons of it. It's about two street kids suffering from pica, a rare psychological disorder that, in real life, compels people to ingest things that aren't actually edible like dirt, coffee grounds, nails, etc. But we take it to a fantastical level with the main characters getting high off anything they can get their hands on like drano, bleach, antifreeze, etc. and use it as a metaphor for drug addiction and alcoholism. The main characters fall into a codependent and self destructive relationship using each other to exercise their demons of alienation from society but ultimately destroy themselves in the end. Think Leaving Las Vegas if it was a Troma film, Sid and Nancy on acid...you get the picture.

If this sounds like something you'd be in to, ask yourselves these questions...

Do you love cult films? Horror films? Horror-romance film? Drugged out films?
Do you love gore? Debauchery?
Do you love fucked up extreme or trashy films in general? Do you really want to star in one?
Do you live/can work in the bay area?
Can you start working immediately? I mean immediately.
Are you okay with nudity/sexuality and some bizarre and disgusting behavior?
(It's called Aberrant Behavior, after all)
Maybe you prefer it?
Are you not shy? Maybe a little bit of an exhibitionist?
Do you have a pretty open schedule to start shooting?

Can you work for 125 dollars a day plus food and a negotiated percentage of the profits?

Can you do basic make up for your part and the other lead? That'd be a bonus for us.

We're shooting this movie in at least two parts over the next three to four months. Will that work for you?

Are you serious about this type of work? We are!

No vague/flakey responses will be considered. If your interested in auditioning, get back to us and we'll set up an audition at our set at 7th and howard in the SOMA.

I watched The Signal recently and really liked it. You can stream it on Netflix for those who have accounts. The middle section was funny as hell and unexpected to say the least.

"Otis" was creepy. Maybe it's because I probably went to school with a guy who seemed just like him.

With a little help from a fellow tribie here, he found what he was looking for, which I thought was very cool and showed what Tribe should always be about!
People interacting and at times helping each other out :)

So, it got me thinking here... (Sometimes that is a dangerous statement....Me...thinking...Ha Ha Ha!!!)
What are your favorite Horror Movies when it comes to....

Vampires?
Werewolves
Zombies
Ghosts
Sci-Fi
or all around just flat out gore? (like the Hostel, Wolf Creek, Hills Have Eyes genre...not sure how you would classify those..)

For me?
Vampires.....modern day? (I can still remember being scared of the old Hammer Horror movies as a little Kid watching them late at night! Ha Ha Ha!!) I would say a few of my favorites are.....
"Lost Boys", "Fright Night" and the re-made version of "Salem's Lot" (it was re-envisoned for a TBS Mini-Series a few years back with Rob Lowe as the main character)

Werewolves?
"American Werewolf in London" and (the Original) "The Howling"

Zombies?
Gotta love the Godfather of Zombie-doms George Romero's original stuff (Night, Dawn and Day), I also LOVE "Return of The Living Dead" and the re-make of Dawn

Many years ago, I watched what seemed to be a fairly pedestrian late-night vampire flick on the tube. But there was a surprise ending. The leader of the local village vigilantes had a few moments alone with the vampire, just before killing him. After telling the vampire that he had been terrorizing the village far too long, the 'hero' revealed that he was a werewolf, and that he wanted all of the villagers for himself!

Because of the ending, the film is a great metaphor for international politics. Does anyone remember the name of the movie, or who was in it? Thanks.

This film is...a sort of psuedo documentary about Unit 731, hell on earth in WW2. Those japs were extremly cruel. Don't watch this movie unless you have strong nerves. (and it's 4 hours long)

I'll quote (from imdb)

>> Having seen Andrey Iskanov's two earlier works, "Nails" & "Visions of Suffering", I was very much looking forward to his latest. I have seen "Men Behind the Sun" so I know what Unit 731 was about, but "Men Behind the Sun" seems like "The Sound of Music" in comparison to THIS film. <<

what films or moments impacted you and got you into horror?

misunderstood the last thread.... so here we go... what moments in film history are branded onto your brain that makes you love horror... that impacted you and taught you the thrill or love...

FOR ME? These are the films that slightly effected me, that were horror and important before I knew horror or important.

Shining saw too young.. and the blood elevator was bad, but the butler with the bear messed me up
Scanners - head explosion. I saw that at age 6 or so.
Creepshow - Ted Danson, our friend from Cheers, getting owned on the beach
Something Wicked this way Comes
Watcher in the Woods - this really, really fucked me up
Friday the 13th Part II
The Day After - messed with my reality versus fiction
My 7th grade Sex ed class that showed herpes pictures
Poltergeist - the face peeling scene
Thriller (Yes, Landis got me.. speaking of Landis) - namely the oil drippy mouth scene
American Werewold in London - the offhanded way they dealt with horror as real... a conversation with a corpse.
Blue Velvet when he finds the ear
Willy Wonka with the chicken head cut off scene
The Thing - the dog scene
Amityville Horror (saw way way too young)
Excorcist (saw bits and pieces by accident for years)

And Chiller Theatre on KTVU as a kid.... saw a lot there.

There was some others.. I am sure I will remember. I am always interested in what sparked my fandom.

Been trying to find this movie i saw as a child and so far no luck so figured id ask here and hope someone knew of it. Saw it as a child on one of those late night chiller types, i can remember it was a vampire movie either spanish or Italian. I remember at the end the survivors board a bus and drive through the woods fending off "wild vampires" and naviagting the dense trees. Finally they come to a near by village they all happily ge out the bus and the "we are saved" happy music comes up, only as you see the whole village is a vampire town. An cannot for the life of me find a lead or title. In good news however finally found old childhood scare favorites Tentacles and Shock waves with that island of dead s.s guard sombies so thats a good thing :).

As riots break out all over Paris after a right-wing government is elected, reluctant thief Yasmina (Karina Testa) recruits a few friends to exploit the bedlam by looting. With the police on their tail, the gang splits up and regroups at a hostel near the Luxembourg border to divide their haul. But the decision proves fateful when the innkeepers turn out to be neo-Nazi freaks who want to make Yasmina the brood mare for a new Aryan master race.

I have it now. Anyone seen it?

What are some of your favorite Horror Novels that you have read that you would like to see turned into a well made kick-ass movies?

I am a fairly huge Zombie Fan, so I would love to see the following Novels turned to Movies

Max Brooks "World War Z" (I have heard that this book is actually in development for a movie...but word is on the sketchy side)

Brian Keene's "The Rising", "City of The Dead" and "Dead Sea" (A trilogy of kick ass zombie stories!).....and his non Zombie work "Conqueor Worm" (Freaky end of the world stuff, check it out :) You may be glad you did :) )

"Wet Works" (A Novella about the effects of a passing comet that causes the dead to reanimate....the main character is a Special Ops Soldier that comes back to life after being murdered by his own goverment. The other zombies in the Novel are intelligent, thinking evil undead creatures....)

Easily one of the strongest horror offering i have seen....EVER.
Please be warned: This film is definitely not for everyone.
I physically felt ill as the movie unfolded.
The finale is sure to please even the most jaded fan.

I recommend you seek this one out immediately. The less you know about the plot, the better.

But this is hilarious.

It was too dark. And *there* were too many homages.

The Perfect Horror Movie?

Ok my friends
Here is a question I would like to pose to ALL of you Horror Movie Fans here in our little slice O tribe!
So tell me/us

What do YOU think would comprise the Perfect/Ultimate Horror Movie?
If you could make that Movie? What would it entail?
Would you make a Movie about Zombies? Werewolves? Vampires? Demons from another Dimension/Level of Hell? Horrific Ghosts/Poltergeists? Or would it be a rockin' kick ass Monster created in a Lab/Experiement gone awry situation? Or would it involved Alien Beings from another world or dimention? Or would it be a Psychological Scary Killer on the loose sorta thing?
Would you make in balls to walls Bloody Gorey? Or would the violence happen off screen and left to the audiences imagination?

Yes, there are certain genres that may seem to be over done?
But with some imagination and some "reinvention" anything is possible of late...it seems like with the upcoming re-imagining of the Friday The 13th Movie, Nightmare on Elm Street and the recent re-makes of "The Hills Have Eyes..." movies...we are all in for a bumpy and eventful ride!! :)

Top DVD picks for 2007?

My Top 5:

1. Black Sheep - This is my favorite new horror film from a year of GREAT genre releases. It's not the scariest film you'll ever see, but it's definitely one of the more original. This is one splatter comedy that never disappoints.

2. Evil (To Kako) - This is set apart by some innovative editing, camera-work reminiscent of early Raimi, and some of the best kills since Bad Taste...It's the first Greek zombie film, and probably the best splatter comedy that you haven't seen. Due to some unfortunate cover art, this one never found the right audience, but I'm always talking it up to try to change that.

3. Hatchet - Fun splatter comedy/classic slasher flick with a cool new monster, lots of in-jokes, plenty of gore, and some fan-favorites making cameos, including Kane Hodder as the monster...As far as I know, these guys even invented the gas-powered belt-sander just to shoot an innovative kill.

4. Behind The Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon - Speaking of in-jokes, this horror mockumentary is a great exploration of what makes horror films work...A bit light on the gore, but plenty of referential stuff for the real horror fans. Even without the gimmick of being a documentary about the country's newest supernatural slasher, this would've been on my top horror list.

5. Planet Terror - The better half of the Grindhouse double feature was definitely this zombiesque bloodbath from Robert Rodriguez. It's got completely over the top performances, action and gore, not to mention a cast that will be familiar to any gorehound. If you haven't seen it, make sure you don't fast forward through the Machete trailer!!

Has anybody seen the blue ray technology with this movie? Supposably it has 96 alternative ways you can go with the movie? We have been trying to obtain it in our area, but no store carries it. Looks like I will have to purchase it online. Just curious if it was worth it

I have seen the regular version, and I will say, it was 10x better than the first!!

I rented and watched three movies tonight. I love a sequal!

1. White Noise 2.
Yeah they made a second one. Kinda Christian oriented, but I enjoyed it, I'll be afraid to look out of a window at night for a while....damn dead people always looking in windows.

2. Boogey Man 2
run of the mill thrasher flick with an " I'm sooooo much more fucked up than you" group therapy thing, I'm renting The Breakfast Club next time I wanna see a movie like that. Molly Ringworm is 10X more scary. Some nice naked moments, with beautiful actors.

3. Bad Blood
A Portugese film about superstition and possestion. So much God I felt like I was in church.....but It had me interested the whole way, It was original and at times very freaky. Subtitled. I recommend this film if you can do subtitles.

Story: You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door.
Story: There is a small mailbox here.

If you can guess what the above is, you can also guess how ridiculously awesome the film could be.

unless post production is heavy... then they are screwed.

This is very sad... the trailers had Heath as the greatest joker ever.

Horror or not, the first one was dark... and I am excited about the next one.

this is really sad.

i am sure that I'm not the only one who saw this over the weekend...

i enjoyed it quite a bit...lots of great violence and destruction...some good scares, naturalistic humor, and an unexpected amount of gore
would've liked to see some alternate angles, but obviously would've been a different kind of movie if it weren't done as a single-camera subjective sort o' thing (a la Blair Witch Project) maybe someday, there will be a sequel (direct to video?) that shows more of the city-wide carnage

it felt similar to War of the Worlds, in that it was a personal story during an epic event, but that's where the comparison ends...unlike WotW, this one has some rewatch value...i know that i want to see it again when i'm not seated so close to the screen

HELL YES.

It is exciting to see horror go from silent art, a b-movie joke, to cult, to mainstream, to geekboy remake and exploitation heaven...

back to art.

Horror is without a doubt the finest medium for social commentary in film. My opinion....

finally people get it.

There are two horror movie scenes I remember from the late 70's/early 80's that I can't place. They may or may not be from the same film. The first scene is someone of a school playground getting beheaded on the merry-ro-round. The second scene is someone sitting on the floor with a power drill going toward their head. Thanks!

Made you look. Really I just wanted to take the Sequels argument to the next logical level. How about we see if we can actually agree that perhaps some excellent (very good?) films in the horror genre have in fact been generated in the past, oh, 17 years, and if so, then lets extol their many virtues. Wee.

So that's the challenge. What, if any, 4 star (out of 5) horror features have been created since 1990? You come up with your list and I'll come up with mine. Double wee.

Then maybe we can see how many have been made in this decade or something. You all like to make lists, right? Ya crazy weirdos. So go on, you've got homework to do.

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Flight_of_the_Living_Dead/70074858?trkid=90529

Seriously...

okay I am not going to shoot off saying this is the best flick ever. At one point I almost got bored with the under the floor bit. But this is a high finish very low budget zombie film with some GREAT character actors. It was hilarious, fun, and a great entry into the zombie world.

Not as good as Undead or some of the artsy zombie stuff, but not as bad as the Dead Hate the Living.

It is like Snakes on a Plane crossed with 28 days later.

Hilarious.

Anyone seen it?

My wife's kids just joined us from Brazil and they had never been to a movie theatre. Being a horror freak I thought it would be nice to instill some fear into the little buggers. The only horror flick in theatres near us was "30 days of night". It was ok, it had all been done before, no surprises, but for them it was HELL! They spent most of the movie with their heads buried in their coats and a look of pure panic on their faces.

In short, they LOVED it. They can't wait to go back to the movies. I do believe I've created little monsters!

So, now I get to rent all the classics. Their mom is pissed :)

Greatest story of all time.

www.apple.com/trailers/wb...d/large.html

And I don't GIVE A DAMN.... I am going to enjoy this like Hitchhiker's Guide... without pomp or arrogance about "this isn't like the book."

I even like that the pup seems to be with him. In the book when that dog dies I cried out loud.. .sobbing.

I am so excited.

I recently watched "No Country for Old Men," the new Coen Brs film.

It ROCKED, I have never been more affraid of psychopath in my whole life. Javier Bardem(whom I have always appreciated) is the scariest freakshow ever.

it is really a dark thriller about a bag of money, but any horror fan could appeciate it. The ending is a little artsy however/

The Trailer Effect

Do you have any movies that you HAD TO SEE because of the trailer, but were completely disgusted with yourself for having sat through?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T5_0AGdFic&feature=related

What about movies that you skipped in the theatres because of some crappy trailer, only to be amazed when you finally caught it at a friend's place?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmkVWuP_sO0&feature=related

I feel like I only remember the great trailers for movies I loved, but I'm sure that there were some great ones for movies I didn't...I know that I've seen plenty of good horror trailers, but couldn't think of any that were for bad movies.

So I have this tradition... for the entire month of October....
me and my buddies get together and watch old horror flix.
Sometime we pick based on genre, ( Zombies,Vampires, etc.)
director, ( Argento,Bava,Castle, etc.) or decade This year we're
watching a few Hammer Classics ( Damn I miss ' Bob Wilkin's
Creature Feature !! ' ) and some Vincent Price gems. So far we've seen:

The Devil Rides Out
Plague Of The Zombies
Witchfinder General aka General Worm
Theater Of Blood
Dracula Has Risen From The Grave
Capt. Kronos Vampire Hunter
Mask Of The Red Death
Premature Burial
I Monster
Fall Of The House Of Usher
The Satanic Rites Of Dracula
The Pit & The Pendulum

Anyone have any suggestions?
They don't have to be Hammer films.
Basically we're open to watching anything
from the 60's and 70's. Last week we saw Omega Man. LOL!
Wow! Dig those fonky fros on them zombies!

What do you guys do for Halloween?

Rob Zombie is the man once again. His vision of Micheal Myers is creepy as fuck. The kid that plays the young Micheal Myers does a wicked job as well.

I have this movie on my PC. I've watched aout 1/2 of it. It's not quite what I was expecting. Does anyone who has seen it, come up with a compelling reason to finish it?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning: Spoilers? Sort of in general, I guess.

So, like any respectable horror fan I had next to no expectations watching this prequel. My hope was only that it not be as bad as the remake which was very yucky-bad. Well, this was a bit better as it sufficiently entertained me for 85 minutes. Not alot or enough Leatherface however. Although they make an effort at detailing his origins for a few scenes, the film isn't really about him, and he's kind of missing for the first half. Really the plot concerns 4 young perople, 2 bikers, and Leatherface's crazy sadistic, cannibalistic uncle who basically steals the show. Leatherface gets his gore on, don't get me wrong. Its just he is not the driving force for the movie, I wouldnt say. I give the film 2 1/2 chainsaws up.

I'd love to hear what others had to say. Go. Now.

Can you identify this movie/movies?

OK, long shot, but, there was this, I guess it was a collection of short horror movies that used to air around halloween when I was, *cough*, well it was back in the early 80s. I THINK Vincent Price hosted it.

One short involved a man being stalked by a bunch of little monsters with potatoe like heads, but light would hurt them, so he kept running around until finally being reduced to using matches.

Another involved a man and a woman being trapped in your requisite creepy town with (zombies/vampires?). They are holed up in a church, and gradually try and escape using a big crucifix to get to his car.

In between movies, there's an extremely creepy, and for the time, risque scene of a sort of burlesque stripper who dances behind a screen, and removes her clothes, and then her flesh, until it's just a skeleton dancing around.

I know it's a shot in the dark, but still. If you know of this movie, I'd appreciate it.
