I guess if someone had an extremely unique take on something (a visionary), then maybe, just maybe it might be worth letting them have a chance. A simple update with new effects doesn't warrant a remake and simply shows they're only out for money (which is understandable to some extent), but come on!

          They're remaking Suspiria? WTF?

Why did Rob Zombie think it would be a good idea to remake something that was already perfectly executed? Is it some idea of tribute to John Carpenter?

At least sequels allegedly add something to the storyline. :p

            agreed!

            the horror genre is finished.

if you go back to the 60's,70's, and 80's, low budget horror flicks had mood and atmosphere and soundtrack to compensate for lack of a budget...now, big budget films don't even have THAT stuff...the lighting is typical hollywood crap, soundtracks are more for CD sales, cinematography is like something right out of a "how to shoot movies for dummies" book, the gore is predictable, the "scarey moments" are predictable and rehashed from all of those low budget films from the 60's 70's and 80's, and even the contrived "sex" and "gratuitus" nudie scenes are fucking stupid (if they show anything at all!)...AND, they are all PG-13!

the horror genre has gone the way of the dodo bird. nothing shocking, gut-wrentching, or authentically scary. Sorry, but that dude getting his fingers cut off in Hills Have Eyes doesn't cut it for me...there was no single bad guy in that film that gave you nightmares!!!I mean, the orignal one had a chrachter that you saw when you closed your eyes-same goes for friday the 13th, Nightmare on elm st, suspiria, and even SCREAM...they all had some one who you could be "afrain of"....even "texas chainsaw the beginning" butchered the whole leatherface thing because they made him a victim!

Hostel and Saw might have offered something, but both movie concepts ran dry very quickly, and there was really no reason to re-watch either of those two because the "shock value" is gone.

well, hostel DOES have those two hot chicks....but thats not a good enough reason to re-watch a movie that was "average at best"....middle of the road, almost forgettable...

sorry, but Ive lost my patience with the horror scene....

I agree with you Sunshine. However, while most horror movies nowadays blow, especially the studio films, there are actually some really good low budget horror still being made.

Have you seen /Zombie Honeymoon', 'Feast', etc. While these may not be groundbreaking or frightening, they are well made and contain originality and creativity unseen in any Hollywood production.

Also, have you seen 'Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon'? If not, I highly recommend it to everyone on here. It succeeds where 'Scream' fails in its deconstructing of horror conventions. It is about a serial killer ala Jason , Freddy, Mike Myers who hired a film crew to document his actions. He explains why certain horror cliches take place, how the killer deliberately sets up these cliches, and so on. It is quite hysterical and really a statement about the state of horror movies today (dull, unoriginal, unscary, etc.)

you might want to check out some indie offerings before writing off the whole genre...

I have seen a few good ones recently that were pretty original, and certainly on par with any of their 60s-80s predecessors.

Black Sheep was a kickass nature-gone-wrong horror fest with great monsters, fun cinematography and kills, tonnes o' gore and splatter

Behind the Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon was pretty awesome as well...it's a great mockumentary take on slashers that really looks into what makes the genre work while subverting some of the usual conventions...great stuff with a cool twist

Hatchet hits theatres this friday, and is about as close to an 80s slasher film you can get without going back to 1985...super-low-budget horror at it's finest with a great monster antagonist that is sure to inspire those nightmares you miss (maybe not in you, but i can definitely see Hatchet-played by Kane Hodder-become another classic monster)

...and that's just the big ones with marketing money...there's tons of foreign stuff worth paying attention to or checking out...Severence, Evil, Plaga Zombie, Atomik Circus are out there too if you know where to look...

just because you haven't been paying attention to quality output is no reason to state that the genre is finished...do a little research before passing judgement...

more on topic...i actually liked the remake of Dawn of the Dead...if they had given it a different title, i think more horror fans would've embraced it...then again, that one was definitely a fresh take on the classic

god forbid you take my posting seriously...you might see just how wrong you are

i think it's really the comments of people who just throw out a statement like "the ______ is dead" with nothing to back it up are saying "look how cool i am because i don't like anything current or mainstream!"
this isn't a contest to see who can be the most obscure...i was really trying to point out stuff that you may have missed while ranting about the dire state of horror today

if you did read through my posting, you'd have realized that i was suggesting a bunch of quality stuff that's recent, as well as defending studio rehashes by pointing out one that i thought was actually pretty good...a more appropriate response from you might have stated that you'd taken indies into account, and still found the industry wanting for some reason...building an argument from there instead of taking offense and trying to insult me

Allegories, parables, morality plays, etc...sure, but I'm not always convinced that any effort is made to avoid complete and utter derivation for the sake of cashing in. Would you agree that some of the remakes are hackneyed attempts to capitalize on the previous film? In the land of branding, marketing, product placement, franchising, where money makes the world go 'round, I expect no less when it comes to a remake. In other words, I remain skeptical. Is that so wrong? :-)

good point, but aren't most films made to "cash in"?

From the first Frankenstien up to Van Helsing, producers have been cashing in on Mary Shelly and Bram Stoker. I speak specifically to the genre when I say that with out remakes, there would be no genre at all. (this is only my opinion)

Shut the ffffff up.... all of you !

If you're so damn bored with horror movies then go rent wedding crashers....... gfaw......

All hprror movies are remakes of older movies and there is really not much that is new in the last 20 years.

Where would horror movies be with out all the remakes of Dracula and Frankenstein that CREATED the whole genre.

We would have bad effects, horrid acting and still be scared by clay models. The genre is built on the retelling of stories, so if you are not happy with remakes don't watch horror movies, cuz guess what; Freddy, Jason, Pumpkinhead, and that damn clown from IT and every other Pinheaded sadist, are just incarnations of the boogyman.

    HALLOWEEN the REMAKE KICKS ASSSSSS!

        Agreed with Arne.

These are parables, ancient stories... the concept of horror is that it is derivative and a sort of simulacram of society.

new ideas are hard to conjure, and this.. of course... is not a new idea.

            ALL of them? REALLY?

I know that some people would disagree with me, but I thought that the remake of Dawn of the Dead was really entertaining...
I kind of wish that they had called it something else, as it would have stood better on it's own. Without the preconceptions brought on by the title, it would not suffer by comparisons to the original. They are VERY different films, and each achieves something very different. While the original has a great commentary on the consumer culture of the time, the remake focused more on the raw horror of trying to survive a zombie apocalypse.

I am also a big fan of John Carpenter's "The Thing". I believe that it's one of the greatest horror films of all time, but it is a remake...I would love to hear why the original is better, because I would definitely need to rewatch it. Herzog's Nosferatu is pretty great as well...both the English and German versions. There are plenty of examples of non-genre quality remakes as well (like the new 3:10 to Yuma), but I'll try to keep it topical since this is the horror movie group.

What about remakes by the original filmmakers? I didn't like the American Ringu remake, but I am looking forward to the Katamura-produced American version of Versus and the Haneke-directed version of Funny Games...

I know that sunshine is just trolling with flame-bait, but he brings up a greater question: Do all remakes suck, or are there some that make the practice seem worthwhile? I would definitely argue for the latter...Even though they are far between, there is an occasional worthwhile (yes, even great) remake. Would anyone agree, have any other examples, or argue for why mine should not be counted as quality?

ian, I TOTALLY agree with you about "the thing" and with "dawn of the dead"....I was referring to the "neo-remakes"-like halloween, texas chainsaw, and hills have eyes. and this bullshit about remaking susperia....please.

I think if you are going to re-make a film, especially a "classic" (halloween was for a very long time the 'most successful independent film of all time'), then you should at least wait, say, 40 yrs or something...

I have a hard time taking all of these neo-remakes seriously-and prequals....like how they made leatherface some sympathetic character....and now michael myers...can't someone just be PURE EVIL? PLEASE??? can we have a fucking villan who is just a bastard with no "abused when he was a kid" bullshit or tragic figure crap?

Thats why I love some of the italian flicks. The bad guys are BAD. EVIL. sick and twisted right down to the core.

and now its like "ohhh, poooor michael myers!" please. help me.

Fuck these horror movies now. I'm goping to watch Spongebob. at least he is PURELY stupid, and not becasue he had a "troubled childhood"....**snicker** relax-I'm kidding. but you get my point.

                      remakes? who gives a shit.

Seriously.... by the end of the 80's and through the 90's we dealt with such shitty, mindless and vapid romantic comedies.... think of it this way...

if every sequel to a horror franchise meant one less romantic comedy, what would you say?

We are in the heyday of horror and geeky fanboy franchise heaven.... if a graphic novel was even thought of as potentially cultish, they will make it.

I dunno.... we complain that there aren't enough horror films. Then we get them, and we complain how they are disseminated.

I think we are doing a bit of the sour grapes here......

we got and keep getting our grapes, but now we think they are icky.

i'm not much for sour grapes. unless its used to make merlot.

i like romantic comedies. whats wrong with that? you mean you don't like jennifer aniston or kate hudson?

and i am not so much about "quantity" of horror movies so much as i want "quality", and if i have to list a top ten of my all-time horror movies, every single one of them would be from before 1990. That I can't help. the "heyday" of horror was in the 1970's, not now. we are in the "gayday" (pardon the expression...its a figure of speach). so so many so-called "great" newer horror movies have no balls, are way too overproduced to have NO PLOT, or are some remake or BLATENT rip off of a movie we all grew up watching. remaking halloween is simply balsphemy, as is the hills have eyes, and I will never forgive them for making Leatherface a "sympathetic" character.

Hostel and Saw 1 are probably the cream of the crop of the "newer" flicks, in my opinion, but 28 weeks later was a piece of shit with a cheesy commercially acceptable soundtrack.

Thats my story and I'm fucking sticking to it!

now, where is my copy of "the Gates of Hell"?

thank god we have people like sunshine to tell us what's worthwhile...my job would be a LOT harder without him!!

i know that this has come up before, just because you haven't seen much that you like since the 70s doesn't mean that horror stopped there. it just means that the style you like ended there...since you think that Saw and Hostel are the only worthwhile films of the last 20 or so years, it'd be pretty easy to see why you don't like the tonnes o' great splatter comedy to come down the pipe since 1990. if you are just following what makes it into the theatres, you are really missing out on a lot of stuff. then again, if you were only seeing horror in the mainstream theatres, you'd have missed most of the quality output of the 60s-70s as well.

i know that i am only feeding the flame troll (sunshine), but i have to say again...there is PLENTY of great horror around...check out the activity on this board...sure, most of it is flame bait, but there are some good recommendations occasionally.

                              ok...last time that i'll bite...i promise

i have been posting to this thread with a counterpoint to a certain (undefended) opinion that all recent horror sucks...in this horror forum, there have been many examples to disabuse this notion, but without any argument against all of the evidence to the contrary, one person posts again and again with the same thing, "horror sucks"

by pointing out the idiocy of this point over and over, i am hoping that he might admit that his overgeneralization may be more than a bit misguided...there is plenty of good horror coming out these days...some of it, i would even consider great (or at least wildly entertaining)
my main point in my responses is, and has been, that while much of the mainstream stuff doesn't look so good, there is plenty of underground, indie, and direct to video stuff in what another poster has termed a "heyday of horror and geeky fanboy franchise heaven", hoping that someone holding an antithetical position might come to realize that many of their favorite classics originally came up in that same way...

i love talking about film in general, and horror has always been my favorite genre...forgive me if i try to defend attackers who claim that something i hold so dear "sucks"
