My Top 5:

1. Black Sheep - This is my favorite new horror film from a year of GREAT genre releases. It's not the scariest film you'll ever see, but it's definitely one of the more original. This is one splatter comedy that never disappoints.

2. Evil (To Kako) - This is set apart by some innovative editing, camera-work reminiscent of early Raimi, and some of the best kills since Bad Taste...It's the first Greek zombie film, and probably the best splatter comedy that you haven't seen. Due to some unfortunate cover art, this one never found the right audience, but I'm always talking it up to try to change that.

3. Hatchet - Fun splatter comedy/classic slasher flick with a cool new monster, lots of in-jokes, plenty of gore, and some fan-favorites making cameos, including Kane Hodder as the monster...As far as I know, these guys even invented the gas-powered belt-sander just to shoot an innovative kill.

4. Behind The Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon - Speaking of in-jokes, this horror mockumentary is a great exploration of what makes horror films work...A bit light on the gore, but plenty of referential stuff for the real horror fans. Even without the gimmick of being a documentary about the country's newest supernatural slasher, this would've been on my top horror list.

5. Planet Terror - The better half of the Grindhouse double feature was definitely this zombiesque bloodbath from Robert Rodriguez. It's got completely over the top performances, action and gore, not to mention a cast that will be familiar to any gorehound. If you haven't seen it, make sure you don't fast forward through the Machete trailer!!

so there was absolutely NOTHING you liked on DVD all year?!?

i understand not getting scared of films when reality is so frightening, but i couldn't imagine not having any horror films that you enjoyed...not if you are actually a horror fan on any level

i don't think that i was actually frightened by any of the films on my list, but i definitely thought that they were all extremely entertaining

just out of curiosity, are there any horror films that you DO like? not just from this year, but from ever?

THE NUMBERS MEAN NOTHING... No specific order.

          10)Flight of the Living Dead

          9) *Behind the Mask* was derivative fun, almost not a horror film, and sure to piss off anyone that doesn't have a healthy dosage of film geekdom in their blood rather than looking for horror.

          8) The new *Halloween* showed a mature Rob Zombie... he played it well leaving some of the gore and stuff to the imagination. Nothing like his sophomoric and campy Ho1000C.... which was fun, but a total mess. It wasn't deconstructing genres... he was throwing them up.
The new Halloween was awesome fun for the reason it made the original series more edgy, while also showing Rob tempering his ultra violence.

          7) Planet Terror was great, but.........

          6) I am Legend,

          5) Death Proof was sheer genius

          5) 28 Weeks Later

          4) No Country for Old Men (dude was scary)

          3) Hostel II was so underrated... and it had such a better storyline, and was much more cerbral and complex. I really enjoyed it more than I expected.

          2) Bug

          1) The Host

haven't seen the mist yet, but that is way high rated.

Severance is supposed to be the best black comedy gore film ever.....

In the end, Reversible is still the scariest film I saw last year... and it is from 2002.

i have Wrong Turn 2 on dvd, but haven't had the chance to watch it yet...if you saw the pile of stuff waiting for me, you'd know why...i'll let you know after i watch it (if you haven't yet)

Severance was GREAT...very entertaining/funny, with some great gore and characters...i would definitely recommend it (it would've easily been on my top 10 horror dvds this year)

i forgot about Bug though...i loved that one too...definitely up there for CREEPIEST!!

i wouldn't call No Country a horror film, but it's between that and Eastern Promises for my fav movie of the year...i loved both of those...

the only one i wouldn't agree with you on is Death Proof...i have to rewatch it before passing final judgement, but i'm not looking forward to rewatching it after seeing the double-feature in the theatres. i did love the car crash from the first part and the chase from the second, but i felt like there was WAY too much (super-boring) buildup. like i said, i'll have to give it another chance if you rank it so highly

No Country wasn't a horror... but a nearly supernatural long haired man in all black leather shooting compressed air through people's skulls wins as creepiest killer of the year.

              ugh.

And Death Proof. 100% agreed as far as horror.... I obscured the lines a bit. I think it was a wonderful genre bender, and watched it STRICTLY as an exploitation film... not horror. Great point. Watch it like a 70's pulp b movie drive in exploitation film... maybe you will like it more? Anyhoo night!

sorry guys, I must disagree with you on Bug... I thought that movie was so freakin weird, it wasn't very scary

                I liked:

                28 days
Hostel (have yet to see Hostel 2, though)
                1408
                Captivity
                The Reaping

grrr curse my mind, I can't think of any more right now

I really liked Jack Ketchum's The Girl Next Door.

I picked it up at Best Buy because I like a lot of Ketchum's books and was pretty thrilled to see how well they handled the extremely sensitive subject matter of TGND.

I've heard rumors that they will be pressing a new version of Merhige's Begotten. Even though I've recently paid a bunch of money to get a replacement print of this film, I'd happily pay again for a crisper print (despite the fact that a lot of what makes the film good is how obscured everything is by the vintage film stock).

Oh. Insofar as non-independent film, I'm looking forward to The Mist.

I could watch the ending of that film dozens of times.

i thought last year was great for horror...did you see the films that I had mentioned? just curious since the ones you did mention liking were very mainstream (that's not a dig on your tastes, but asking if you got to see anything that didn't play in that many theatres), while most of my mentions were direct-to-video (i see way too many of that sort for work)

beyond the films I mentioned earlier in the thread, i really liked The Tripper and thought Hell's Ground (Pakistan's first zombie movie) was entertaining too
